Amnesty Int'l recommends birth centers as part of solution to crisis in maternal care

FROM AABC...

We are the richest country in the world yet everyday 2 to 3 women die in pregnancy and childbirth in the USA.  We must call our Representatives and tell them that midwives and birth centers are part of the solution.

A timely report from Amnesty International "Deadly Delivery: Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA" finds that the USA spends more than any other country on health care, and more on maternal health than any other type of hospital care. Despite this, women in the USA have a higher risk of dying of pregnancy-related complications than those in 40 other countries.

Amnesty International recommends improved access to midwifery care and freestanding birth centers as part of the solution to this crisis. We must share this report with our Congressional Senators and Representatives.  This is more support for the payment of the birth center facility by Medicaid.

TAKE ACTION...

We must contact our U.S. Representatives and forward them the Amnesty International ReportBuilding a strong, long-lasting relationship is key to passing the Birth Center Medicaid Bill and future legislation. Call your Representatives and speak with their health legislative aides and follow up by emailing them the Amnesty International Report.

Refer your Representatives the recommendations in the section "Ensure Access to Adequate, Appropriate, Quality Maternal Health Care Provision", and specifically recommendation 43 (page 99). This recommendation specifies birth centers and midwives as a major part of the solution.
