Goodbye Letter From Cassie

MMC Families-

I would like to take a moment to let you all know that as of Jan 5, 2012, I will be leaving MMC.  It is with a huge mix of emotion that I share this information…. I am incredibly sad to say goodbye, but truly elated to make this transition to be able to spend more time with my family.

Happy Changes to our Team of Midwives and Nurses

The MMC Team is changing, but we couldn't be happier about how it's working out. Here, I'll explain...

First, we just lost Kate to bigger and better things. As a new midwife (CNM) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), she's moved onto new things (teaching at Platte River College, home health care for disabled kids and more). But only after she brought a good friend and wonderful nurse to us from Florida - Sara Dietrich. Sara has really bonded with the team and it was great that Kate stayed on to help with the transition.

New class with a Radio Story about Colorado infants and speech health

It's fun when your efforts make the news or coincide with a news story. In this case, our new class in the Midwife's Garden, "Language Development for Infants and Toddlers," was announced the same week Colorado Public Radio aired an interview with Marion Downs.

Vote for Robin Lim, a CNN hero

Robin Lim is the midwife at the birth center in Bali. Tricia Good (LAc) and Linda Raford (CNM, LAc) hold a monthly Shonishin Clinic where the $20 suggested donations from that clinic are sent to Yayasan Bumi Sehat (‘Healthy Mother Earth’) Foundation that serves two non-profit birthing centers and family health clinics in Indonesia.

Mothers and babies need to smell each other

Did you know that a woman builds several thousand new sensory neurons for smell during pregnancy[1]? These are immature at the beginning of pregnancy, which may explain the hypersensitive nose of the first trimester and some food smell aversions. They all fully mature at the end of pregnancy, just at the time when a mother has the strongest imperative to imprint her new baby’s smell into her brain.

(To explain the "newsy" tone... We wrote this as a press release to share with media outlets.)

Understanding "Pregnancy" as a Pre-Existing Condition in Colorado

UPDATE... In addition to the below, DORA (the Department of Regulatory Affairs) makes the argument that depending on the wording and definition of "renewal date," renewal dates would be defined as the first premium due date occurring on or after January 1, 2011. If you think you might have a case for maternity coverage of your current pregnancy, file a complaint with DORA (see link below)! We've had a great deal of success getting maternity benefits for patients who were previously denied.

Listeria Outbreak

By Lisa Carter, RD

As some of you may know, there has been a Listeria outbreak reported in Colorado and surrounding states. The Colorado Department of Public Health has identified nine cases linked to a multistate Listeria outbreak. The outbreak is specific to cantaloupe.

AABC Conference a Real Treat to Host

It was a lot of work, but it was actually a lot of fun! MMC hosted the annual "Birth Institute" for AABC here in Denver. Member centers stayed at the Grand Hyatt, had fun in downtown Denver, and visited MMC twice. On Wednesday, MMC hosted attendees to an AABC "How to Start a Birth Center" workshop. On Saturday, we entertained and showed off the center to Birth Institute attendees. Both groups learned how MMC operates clinically and administratively. And we got the chance to ask detailed questions of birth centers from around the nation.
