Nurse Midwives are an Endangered Species in Colorado and the USA

A quiet professional genocide is occurring in the USA that impacts our country's maternal health in very real ways. Many Americans know our nation's maternal and infant health statistics are the worst in the industrialized world (and have been so for decades), but most don't know that the USA also has the lowest rate of midwife-attended births. The relationship between those figures is correlational and causational.

TRICARE status changes effective April 1, 2013

Starting April 1, 2013, our relationship is changing with TRICARE and their patients using TRICARE coverage. These changes affect all services billed on April 1 or later. Mothers with due dates in April or later will see large increases to their personal financial responsibility for birthing with MMC.

Congrats to the latest member of the MMC Family

Congrats to Sarit Schneider and husband Aaron who successfully adopted baby girl Bria. Bria was born on 12/20/2012, weighing in at 6 lbs, 10 oz and measuring 18.75 inches.

Bria is healthy and hearty. Sarit has been nursing her from the moment she was delivered and both parents were able to be with her 24/7 after she was born.

All of us at Mountain Midwifery are so proud to be able to share with this new family!

New Position for Tracy, New goals for MMC

From Tracy...  I wanted to let the Mountain Midwifery community know about some of the changes taking place at MMC and our plans for the future.  I am very excited that Aubre accepted the job as Clinical Director.  She is already wonderful in her role as midwife, liaison,  staff-developer, and chief “cat herder.”  She has the skills, savvy and desire to help move MMC forward.

All about Pertussis

From Aubre...
Pertussis, or Whooping Cough, is a highly contagious respiratory infection. Pertussis can affect anyone, but is particularly dangerous for the very young. In Colorado, we are experiencing a serious outbreak of pertussis.

Helping a birth center begin in Minnesota

Here in Colorado, many organizations think the HMO model in Minnesota is the panacea to our state's rising health care costs and underperfoming outcomes. In MN, they know different. Managed care can only get you so far. One reason is that these HMOs tend to function like good-old-boy networks, (but instead of boys, its MDs only) and squash innovation that undermines MD dominance. So full acceptance of Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) in their care model continues to face stiff opposition. We are now In-Network with Anthem and Blue Cross Blue Shield

Yay! Effective April 1, 2012, Mountain Midwifery Center is now contracted with Anthem BCBS of Colorado! This is great news for our many patients who have a Blue Cross Blue Shield of some kind (Anthem or out-of-state). We have both facility and provider contracts.

Local Photojounalist speaks out for birth freedom and parental preferences

Kevin Mohatt, a Denver-area photojournalist, wrote a touching op-ed piece for The Denver Post about the frustration and victimization so many parents experience because U.S. hospitals have no regard for patient preferences and the health benefits of natural birth. Like me, Kevin feels we all need to wake-up to the real damage done.
